MILL UPGRADES
In recent years Hardwoods of
Michigan has come up with ways to improve the mill. In
1999 the new Head-Rig Band Saw was hitting metal 6-7 times
daily. To remedy this a Rens metal Detector was
installed. Scanning the logs before they enter the
mill protected the saws and caused efficiency to rise.
In 2001 a new laser scanning carriage was installed near the
Head-Rig. This improved grade yield by eliminating
tear out at the end grain of knots and swirls.
Also in
2001 as new edger was installed to hold edging tolerances
much more specific. This improved yield and quality.
The old edger was then installed in another area of the mill
along with related equipment to handle our blocking and
specialty items more effectively. Most recently, in
the fall of 2001, we made several improvements to our linebar system which includes a new linear setworks and set
fence. This was done to improve quality and hold
thickness tolerances tight for the customer. More
improvements and updates are planned in the future to
improve quality, safety, and yield. |
